As previously reported, this morning, the inhabitants of the Earth could observe the eclipse of Mars by the Moon. Astronomer Andrew McCarthy took full advantage of this, not only observing the rare phenomenon with his telescope, but also capturing the moment Mars appeared from behind the Moon.
“This is the moment when Mars peeked out from behind our moon after being hidden for an hour. This picture was taken with my largest telescope and a special high speed camera. Seeing another planet rising on the horizon of our Moon was a very surreal sight.” wrote astronomer on his Twitter account.
Recall that the occultation of Mars by the Moon occurred on the morning of December 8th. Residents of the northern and eastern regions of the European part of Russia could observe this unusual phenomenon from 05:16 to 09:13 Moscow time. When viewed from these regions, one could see how Mars disappeared behind the northern edge of the disk of the Moon and became visible again after a while.
Note that during this winter, astronomers will be able to observe three more similar phenomena. The lunar eclipse of Mars will repeat on January 3rd and 31st, and on February 28th. The first two eclipses will not be visible from Russia, while the February eclipse will be visible from the northernmost regions of the country.
