American journalist Grant Wahl died during the 2022 World Cup quarter-final match in Qatar between the Netherlands and Argentina.
Wahl’s last tweet, who worked on the game, was about the Netherlands free-kick in the 11th minute added to the second half, which led to the second goal of striker Wout Weghorst.
Then, as the game went into overtime, Grant likely had an acute stress reaction in the press room at Lusail Stadium, his agent Tim Scanlan said.
Arriving doctors could not resuscitate a 48-year-old man. The journalist was sent to the nearest hospital, but it was not possible to save him.
Note that on Thursday, Wahl said on a Spotify podcast that he fell ill with bronchitis at the World Cup and turned to local doctors several times. His agent said that the journalist had a busy schedule at the tournament.
The US Football Federation expressed its condolences on the death of Grant Wahl.
The journalist worked for CBS Sports. Wahl is known for his work at Sports Illustrated and Fox Sports, and he also wrote a book about David Beckham.
Just an incredible designed set-piece goal by the Netherlands.

Terrible news about US sportswriting giant Grant Wahl who has died in Qatar doing the job he loved, aged just 49. He was a brilliant journalist. RIP. pic.twitter.com/tZVs1m5StK
