Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull could have relaunched the saga initiated by Steven Spielberg in 1981 when it was released in 2008, and became the first episode of a brand new trilogy. The more than mixed reception received by the film, then the takeover in October 2012 of LucasFilm by The Walt Disney Company slowed down the production of a possible sequel. We finally have to wait until March 2016 to see the American entertainment giant officially announce Indiana Jones 5. Initially scheduled for July 2019, the fifth episode of the franchise has been postponed several times, even before the Covid-19 pandemic. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will finally be released on June 30, 2023 in the United States. We can assume that the film will be screened two days earlier in France, on Wednesday, June 28, 2023.
It took 15 long years to witness the return to cinemas of the most famous adventurer of the 7th Art. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (or Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny from its original title) arrives At the movie theater end of June 2023 after a tumultuous development. It will take 4 months to get the DVD and/or Blu-ray and 2 additional months to possibly (re)watch Indiana Jones’ new adventure on Canal+. The Dial of Destiny could then find a place in the catalog Disney+ 17 months after its theatrical release, i.e. in November 2024. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny sets its plot in 1969, a few months before the first steps of Man on the Moon. While the Cold War between the United States and the USSR (for Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) is in full swing on the ideological and political level, the US government is recruiting former Nazis to win the Space Race against the Eastern bloc. This collaboration is not to the liking of Indiana Jones who, accompanied by his goddaughter Helena, finds himself involved in the plans of Jürgen Voller, a member of NASA and ex-Nazi placed at the head of the moon landing program.
The Dial of Destiny is an integral part of the saga, and takes place precisely 12 years after Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Harrison Ford, who has played the archaeologist since his big-screen debut, has announced that this will be his final appearance as Indiana Jones. The fifth episode will therefore be the last with the American actor, and will conclude the adventures of Henry Walton Jones Jr. of his full name. However, Disney intends to capitalize on the license, even without Harrison Ford. A series for Disney+ is currently in development. Prequel or sequel? Only the future will tell us.

This is James Mangold who was offered the heavy responsibility of filming Harrison Ford’s latest adventure in the role of Indiana Jones. This producer and director notably distinguished himself in 2017 on Logan and in 2019 on Le Mans ’66, two feature films appreciated by the public and acclaimed by critics. He is assisted on the project by the duo Jez Butterworth et John-Henry Butterworth (Edge of Tomorrow, Le Mans ’66) to the script and Phedon Papamichael (Le Mans ’66, Walk the Line) to photography. Finally, the soundtrack is the creation of the official composer of the Star Wars, Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones sagas… the essential John Williams.

Fans of the franchise will be pleased to hear that Harrison Ford resumes one of his most cult roles for a very last adventure against a backdrop of space conquest. He is joined in his last stand by the character of Sallah embodied by an actor whose most famous role was Gimli in the Lord of the Rings trilogy… John Rhys-Davies. Indiana Jones offers a cast of 5 stars to give the reply to Harrison Ford. Disney is looking to expand the Indiana Jones saga into other formats. This cross-media project begins with a video game developed by MachinesGames (Wolfenstein) and published by Bethesda Softworks of which we know very little except the genre in which it fits. The Indiana Jones video game will unsurprisingly be an adventure game. Another project already mentioned a little earlier is currently under construction. Indeed, Disney is working on a live action series intended for its Disney+ SVOD service. As a reminder, Harrison Ford is not involved in the series.
