What do you think of when you hear From Software’s games? Even though you have only followed their activities over the past decade which are indeed more attached to the Soulsbourne genre, you seem to understand the world atmosphere that they have always built even long before that era occurred. He always comes with a dark, dark, and gloomy world, especially with all the death and despair that surrounds him. In his latest interview, Hidetaka Miyazaki said that From Software really couldn’t make games with the opposite approach.
Miyazaki said that there are two reasons why From Software’s games are always dark and gloomy. First, of course, the preferences of the Game Director and Game Developer, which turned out to have been rooted since the From Software era in the past, when the CEO was still held by Naotoshi Zin in the era of King’s Field and Armored Core. This aesthetic preference continues to this day, including in the Elden Ring era.
Miyazaki admits that From Software cannot make games with bright and happy themes or settings.
Second? Miyazaki feels that creating a game with a beautiful and bright setting is something that is beyond From Software’s capabilities and experience as a developer. Instead of experimenting, Miyazaki felt that it would be wiser if their energy was directed to something they are already good at, namely making games with this dark and gloomy world. Something that we also seem to be able to anticipate from Armored Core VI in the future.
From Software itself admits that they still have extra plans for Elden Ring apart from their busy preparations for Armored Core VI for 2023. How about you? Do you like the dark world that From Software has offered so far?
