Microsoft lets time flow but also many Microsoft Edge users. The browser that wants to compete with Google Chrome has no less than 212,000,000 people using its services to browse the Internet. But unfortunately, Microsoft wants to shake things up quickly.
Windows 7 and Windows 8 in Microsoft’s sights
Many people still use Windows 7 these days. Even though many people have made the switch to Windows 10, which is still the most popular version, there are still some holdouts on Windows 7 and 8.
With the arrival of Windows 11, Microsoft has kicked in the anthill and has been offering a free transition for all compatible Windows PCs since its release.. In order to focus on updates for people using the most recent versions of Windows, the American company wants to start gradually abandoning all those who use older versions of the OS.
Windows 7 is the 3rd most used operating system version. Windows 8 and 8.1 did not have the success expected by the company, in particular because of the somewhat questionable graphical interface, but in any case for Microsoft, it is ancient history.
If you are a user of the Microsoft Edge browser and you are running under a Windows 7 or Windows 8 OS, you will no longer be able to benefit from updates, whether for new features, but also for security updates.
Microsoft has set a final date for January 12, 2023, but all of these users will still be able to use Edge for their browsing. The Microsoft service will still benefit from a last update just before the end of the ESU (Extended Security Update) program, on January 10, 2023.
Microsoft wants to encourage users to upgrade to a newer version of Windows, including Windows 11 which is struggling to find users. It can be noted in particular that this loss of speed is also due to the weak sales of PCs during this last year, because of the shortages of components which have increased the prices of this type of machine.
The American company has extended the deadline for users of older versions of Windows to finally switch to Windows 11. It is then easy to imagine that this non-support of Microsoft Edge for these PCs forces consumers to update to Windows 11.
What are Windows 7 and 8 users at risk?
Obviously, who says end of updates, says end of protection from new security vulnerabilities. In general, when software updates, in addition to offering a few small new features, it also automatically updates patches to fill in potential bugs, or even security vulnerabilities that could compromise your data.
It is therefore important for you to update your browser, in order to avoid the leakage of your personal data as much as possible. PC users running Windows 7 and 8 will still be able to use Microsoft Edge to browse the web, but without benefiting from the new features.
If Windows 8 is still a minority in terms of the number of users (about 3% of the Windows base), Windows 7 remains an OS that is still very popular, and this decision could force the fervent defenders of this operating system to switch to Windows 11. .
