The problem of scarcity of water resources was acute from the very beginning.
Instead of relying on the initiative of the municipal authorities on the outskirts of Berlin, where its electric vehicle assembly plant operates, Tesla intends to independently upgrade the local water supply system to cope with a doubling of the production base, Reuters reports. Representatives of the automaker said that the company is ready to finance the drilling of test wells, from which it will be possible to receive water in the future.

Usually such activities are funded by local authorities, but in this case, Tesla is trying to take the initiative into its own hands. Activists and officials are already raising objections, calling the water resources a public good and voicing concerns about Tesla’s move to limit access to new sources for other consumers in the region. Whether the company will invest in the construction of related infrastructure, if water is found, is not specified. It was in Germany that Tesla faced both the strongest bureaucratic difficulties and the opposition of conservationists during the construction of the first stage of its enterprise. The weakness of the local water supply system was cited by the protesters early on in the project, and was later joined by a demand to halt logging and construction work that could disturb local fauna.
