It’s hard not to have high expectations for the Lenovo Legion 7. The Lenovo Legion 7 is one of the most powerful devices on the market and has a large 16-inch display. It’s the AMD equivalent of the same notebook with a Ryzen CPU, which has been around a bit longer. The Legion 7 retains the design and some of the hardware components of the AMD model, like an RTX 3080 Ti, 32GB of DDR5 RAM, and 1TB of SSD storage. This time, however, no Ryzen 9 6900HX is used, but the newer and slightly more powerful Intel Core i9-12900HX.
Given that its Intel-based sibling model is among the best gaming laptops for its performance, design and price, we expected that the same would be the case in our review of the AMD-powered Legion 7. It’s not a perfect notebook, but we were pretty happy with it.
The Legion 7 Gen 7 looks the same as the Gen 6 model. Its subdued gray chassis and clean lines make it look almost like a regular, office-grade notebook until you turn on the extensive RGB lighting that wraps around each edge and obscures the Legion logo on the lid.
Few laptops offer such extensive lighting. The Lenovo Vantage app allows you to change settings and create up to six profiles. Vantage also displays system stats, battery status, warranty information, and provides access to Lenovo Support.

Equipment: Connections fortunately also at the back
The Legion 7’s extensive physical ports begin on the left with a pair of Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports. On the right side is an audio combo jack and a USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 port. New for the Gen 7 is the webcam toggle, which is more effective than a simple privacy shutter (which the notebook doesn’t have) because it physically separates the webcam from the notebook.
The rest of the ports are on the back, including 2.5Gbps Ethernet, a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port, an HDMI 2.1 video-out, and two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports – the right one supports it Charging connected devices while the notebook is switched off.
Convenient illuminated port labels ensure you don’t have to hunt for ports in the dark. The rightmost USB connector that looks like a USB port is for the power adapter.
The 1080p webcam above the display looks sharper than the 720p cam on the Gen 6 model. It doesn’t support scanning for Windows Hello facial recognition, but you can still log in without passwords thanks to a fingerprint reader built into the power button. The Gen 6 model did not have biometric capabilities.
The speakers under the palm rest ensure a loud and clear sound. The included Nahimic app has sound presets and a graphic equalizer.
A well-designed touchpad tops it all off; its smooth surface and tactile clicks make it intuitive. The pad is offset to the left so your palms don’t touch it while typing. External mouse users can disable the pad with the Fn & F7 keyboard shortcut.

The input devices are also a strength of the Legion 7i. The full-size keyboard is responsive and uncluttered, and even the arrow keys are in their own group. The number pad keys are two-thirds the size, but also have a standard layout. The sharp RGB backlighting of each key can be configured via the Lenovo Vantage app. Interestingly, the app allows macro keys to be assigned to keys 0 through 9 on the numeric keypad.
