Destiny 2: Secrets is far from dead

If you’re not a fan of a good secret, raise your hand! Secrets spice up life, and especially that of our heroes when they uncover a mysterious secret. Entire communities are formed to unravel mysteries in games, just think of the sheer endurance of WoW fans when they find a clue to a new puzzle mount or pet – such as Jenafur.

Destiny 2’s secret community (buy now €14.90) is similarly creative and persistent, swarming out with every patch, no matter how small, and with every announcement from the Bungie developers to uncover secrets. One particularly cool secret in the MMO shooter was the Omens mission, which was found when players in Strike Arms Dealer noticed a door that was previously closed… and then suddenly opened. The mysterious and mysterious lure tens of guardians out from behind the stove, even if day-to-day business in Destiny 2 currently seems dull.

With the recently encrypted messages from the developers, things went so far that those responsible at Bungie regularly had to deny: “No, no secret came into play with this hotfix, please don’t waste your time.” This happened so often that Destiny’s Secret Hunters are now wondering, “Are Secrets dead?”

No, Secrets in Destiny 2 are not dead

Assistant Game Director Robbie Stevens provides an answer to this question in the current TWAB of December 15, 2022, who thus refers directly to a misunderstanding. As part of an AMA on Reddit, the Bungista were understood as if there were no longer any secrets when it was actually about the difficulties with encrypting content. Says Stevens, “Our communications were misinterpreted as saying we were no longer creating secret experiences, which is not true. We’ve delivered hidden and secret stories and content this year and we will continue to do so next year.”

However, after that is said and the secret community is possibly leaning back with relief, Stevens also explains that it is not really possible for the developers to create a really secret mission more than once a year. Below is a longer explanation if you want to know more.

Secrets are not created with a snap of the fingers

Stevens writes, “For some in the community, ‘secrets’ means either a secret mission or a mystery. It’s understandable that the community hungers for more of this content and interprets every hidden thing we make as a signpost to something bigger, that You just have to understand that we will never reveal a secret mission or mystery before it goes live, and while we intentionally hide things for you to discover in every release, not every secret is something as big as can be a mission or a puzzle.

If we look back over the past year, The Witch Queen was a release that contained quite a number of secrets, and the Throne World experience was directly influenced by content such as secret missions and dungeons. Also, as many of you have noticed, in the run-up to Lightfall, we kept adding hints and secrets about future content to our stories, lore, and world-building. However, we know you want more. We know we haven’t released a secret mission this year that has the same appeal as Omens, Zero Hour, or Whisper of the Worm. These missions were some of the most challenging content our teams had to develop, and as a result we released at most one Secret Mission in 12 months.

But as we’ve developed our plans for Lightfall and beyond, I want to assure you that we’ve heard the community’s feedback loud and clear, and “bringing more mysteries to Destiny 2″ is an initiative our teams have been working on for a long time months before this conversation came to a head recently. Some mysteries will be small, some will be big, some will be coming next year and some are imminent, but I promise you we have a talented group of people who love this type of content and who know what it’s for Community means discovering and experiencing it.” You can read the original in the December 15, 2022 TWAB on Bungie’s site.
