In a recent interview, Stardew Valley creator Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone opened up about his next game, Haunted Chocolatier. He revealed that he was also inspired by “Diablo 2” for the upcoming title.
Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone works after his Farm hit „Stardew Valley“ currently working on his next game, Haunted Chocolatier. In the title, the players embody a chocolatier whose shop is located in a haunted house.
Barone spoke a little more about the game and the elements that make up Haunted Chocolatier in a recent interview. Among other things, Blizzard’s “Diablo 2” also played a role.
The core of the game is gathering ingredients
“During the early stages of Haunted Chocolatier, I played a lot of Diablo 2,” Eric Barone told ScreenRant. “Getting loot and seeing the numbers in the stats go up? I like that. I feel like a lot of Stardew Valley players aren’t that into it, but I just have to do what I enjoy. And I think that will show in the game if I can get excited about it.”
As for the gameplay, Barone had asked himself, “What if I made a game that’s like the mines in Stardew Valley, but fully fleshed out and done really well?” According to the developer, the core of the game is collecting of ingredients. The own shop would take on a more passive form. As the ingredients are collected, players would be able to explore the world. In doing so, they would also encounter magical realms that can be reached through portals. The ingredients would be obtained by players both through combat and through various trials.

The chocolatier can then use the collected ingredients to make chocolates for his own shop. Initially, players will have to run their own shop. Later, spirits could be used to take care of the shop. “There’s going to be a certain simulation element, like a game like Rollercoaster Tycoon or something, where the customers have specific needs and wants,” Barone said. “Satisfied customers will tell other buyers what contributes to the popularity. A “weekly chocolate news” system will ensure shoppers are excited about specific items from week to week.”
