Live streaming monetization service DonationAlerts has shared statistics on streamers and stream viewers in the past year.
The vast majority of streamers are men: 85.28%. For the most successful of them, the streamer activity has turned from a hobby into a real job and a source of constant income. However, the share of girls has grown by 5% over the year and now stands at 14.72% of all streamers.
The distribution of streamers by age has also undergone some changes. It can be noted that streaming is getting younger, and its popularity is growing among young people. If earlier streamers under the age of 25 accounted for 46%, now this figure has reached 63%.
Most streamers live in Moscow and the Moscow region, as well as in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region (19% and 11.5%, respectively).
This year, Twitch and YouTube disabled monetization for users from Russia, which affected the choice of the main platform for broadcasts. Last year, the majority of streamers (53%) chose YouTube as their main platform, while a quarter (25%) of all streamers chose to stream on Twitch. This year, the picture is completely different: half of bloggers (49%) now choose Twitch as their main platform, while YouTube’s share has dropped to 39%. So far, only 2% of streamers have indicated the Chinese platform Trovo as the main platform, but every fourth (25%) has indicated as an additional one. Significant changes in the distribution of shares in the Russian streaming market next year may be made by the VK Play Live platform launched in August.
80% of revenue comes from 20% of streamers. The average amount of donations per streamer per month is 6276 rubles. And the average amount of one donation is 288 rubles.
Among viewers, as well as among streamers, the majority (78%) are men. The proportion of spectators was 22%, while last year this figure was only 8%. The majority of viewers, as well as streamers, live in the capital regions – Moscow and the Moscow region, as well as in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region (16% and 7%). There are an average of 32 donations per viewer per month, which is an indicator of a very high audience engagement.
