The best and worst smartphones for the photo according to the experience of MKBHD

MKBHD’s blind test has become a must every year, and this year again, the American tech influencer did not disappoint by putting 16 smartphones in competition through photos taken under similar conditions.

Like every year, the blind test of MKBHD caused a sensation. This year, Marques Brownlee, an American tech youtuber, even launched a dedicated site instead of Twitter polls. The objective: to compare 16 smartphones with photos under similar conditions. This is a much more extensive test than the one we recently carried out with high-end smartphones.

The list of competing smartphones

In order not to create bias, MKBHD had hidden the list of smartphones included in this list, he precisely communicated it:

As you can see, the selection of smartphones includes products at different price points, from entry-level to high-end.

To tally the results, an ELO rating system was used to divide the devices into a “Best Overall”, “Best HDR” and “Best Portrait” category. A titanic work that gave very interesting results.

What do the results show?

In the end, the Google Pixel 6a ended up being the “best overall device” in this blind camera test, succeeding last year’s Pixel 5a. The Pixel 7 Pro landed in second place in this category, with the Asus Zenfone 9 completing the winning trio. Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra landed in fifth place, with the iPhone 14 Pro two places down the list.

The top-ranked device for the “Best Standard” shot was the Oppo Find X5 Pro, and the “Best Portrait” was the Pixel 7 Pro. Note that the Sony Xperia 1 IV and Moto Edge 30 Ultra were widely voted the worst cameras on almost every metric.

The MKBHD team had fun calculating the ranking taking into account the price, and the Pixel 6a keeps its first place. There are, however, alternatives, such as the Realme 10 Pro+.
