Already on the Game Awards stage, Hideo Kojima revealed that he had to completely rewrite the story of Death Stranding 2 – his studio’s upcoming game for PS5. He also revealed the reason at the time. The pandemic has been responsible for Kojima’s rethink. In an interview with IGN, the game director went into more detail as to why he scrapped the original story for the Death Stranding sequel.
Hideo Kojima on the reasons
The interviewer said: “A story written prior to this experience would not have resonated with fans in the same way. That was 9/11 [und Metal Gear Solid 2] so. […] When something happens that no one thought possible, works of fiction that were previously written are no longer quite as effective in their entertainment form.” The predecessor launched in November 2019 – and offered with an isolated, empty world happens to have many parallels to the real situation.
“That’s why I completely rewrote DS2 – including the main themes. You can’t just say it never happened. While the games are based on characters that aren’t tied to our reality, the players have been through the pandemic.” explains Kojima in relation to the sequel. Of course, the game director has not yet revealed what Death Stranding 2 will be about in the end. However, fans can look forward to new actors in the game.

In addition to the return of Norman Reedus, Léa Seydoux and Troy Baker, who we already know from the original, two new cast members will join the story in Elle Fanning and Shioli Kutsuna. Incidentally, a film adaptation of Death Stranding (buy now €20.99) is also in the works in parallel with the game. But Hideo Kojima doesn’t want to hire well-known Hollywood actors here.
