Within the remastered version of one of the great classics of the Square Enix series, fighting plays a very important role, and as the protagonist Zack you will have the opportunity to use many different tools to defeat your enemies, including the so-called Material.
These are items that can be equipped in six special slots, each dedicated to a different type of matter, and are used to use spells and skills. Furthermore, the higher the level of a given Materia, the greater will be its effectiveness and that of the spells and skills it affects.
The level up system is based on the mechanics ofDigital Mental Wave, similar to the system for leveling up Zack in Crisis Core – Final Fantasy VII – Réunion, albeit with some important differences. In particular, you will need get a pair of equal numbers inside the slot machine that appears during fights: once the double number is rolled, the Materia equipped in the slot corresponding to that number will increase by one level. For example, if during a fight the slot machine will show the combination 5-3-5, the equipped Materia within the fifth slot will automatically be improved.
It is therefore an extremely peculiar upgrade system that apparently leaves little room for manual customization of your setup, at least in this case. If you want to know more about the game and the management of the Materials, we refer you to our review of Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion.
