December 24th, 2022 at 11:45 a.m. by Maximilian Hohm – According to the latest rumors, Intel does not seem to want to release Meteor Lake-S for socket 1851 and for the desktop. Instead, the chips should only come onto the market as mobile versions. The next CPU iteration after a Raptor Lake refresh would then be Arrow Lake-S on socket 1851. Read more about this below.
Meteor Lake actually seemed to be set as the successor to Raptor Lake in Intel’s desktop area and there were already initial speculations about the exact models, core numbers and performance increases that the new chips should bring with them. But according to the very accurate leaker “OneRaichu” it shouldn’t come to that and Intel shouldn’t bring Meteor Lake to the desktop for Socket 1851, but only offer it as a mobile version for laptops with a low TDP.

So far, the desktop market has been talking about processors with six new P cores and 16 E cores, which should also use Xe onboard graphics. The top model was said to have a TDP of 125 watts. But what does that actually mean for gamers or users who want to switch to a new Intel platform? Intel seems to have something up its sleeve for that. As early as 2023, the Raptor Lake processors are to be replaced by new models with higher clock rates and optimized production, which will enable better power supply.

LGA 1700 would thus support three generations of processors, which is not typical for Intel. According to the rumours, this could also apply to the 1851 socket. Although this should not be launched for Meteor Lake, Arrow Lake-S, a refresh and Panther Lake-S should work on the platform. According to the current state of knowledge, Arrow Lake should also rely on eight P-cores and 16 E-cores, which combined should deliver high gaming and application performance.
Longer-term support for a platform from Intel is a good sign for consumers. As with AM4, substantial updates can be made again after a few years without having to buy a new motherboard straight away. With such an approach, Intel of course continues to fuel the competition with AMD, which can also be seen as a positive signal.
