This is where we like to write things like “User X’s leak on social media platform Y was correct”. But in the case of Metro: Last Light, no leak was necessary at all. The clues on the digital wrapping paper with which Epic announced the next free game as part of the traditional Epic Games Store holiday campaign were too obvious. The characteristic “M” and the stylized subway left no doubt that it would be a representative of the Metro series. And given that Metro: The Last Light Redux has been the subject of freebies in the past, it’s hardly surprising that it really is this excellent first-person shooter.
Epic Games Store: How good is Metro: The Last Light Redux free game?
The doomsday shooter Metro: The Last Light Redux by Ukrainian development team 4A Games is based on the best-selling novels by Russian writer and Putin critic Dmitry Gluchovsky. The background story is a dystopian Moscow in which you have to defend yourself against all kinds of mutants in the subway of the Russian capital after a nuclear war in 2033.
Metro: The Last Light was released in its raw form in 2013 for Windows, Linux, MacOS Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and received very good reviews from the press. In our test at the time, we awarded 84 out of a possible 100 points and praised the title for omitting the nasty moments of frustration of the predecessor. Game Trailers gave it a 9.1 out of 10 and labeled Metro: The Last Light “breathtaking”.
Games Radar was also full of praise and gave it a 4.5 out of 5: “The extraordinarily addictive game hits the nail on the head in terms of gameplay”. Eurogamer was a bit more stingy and only awarded 7 out of 10 possible points: “Lower your expectations and you might be pleasantly surprised.”
