This gift caused a sensation and excitement within the worldwide gaming scene. When it became clear, due to growing evidence, that Epic would be giving away a genuine Triple A game completely free of charge just in time for Christmas Day, there was apparently no stopping it. Death Stranding is the latest masterpiece from legendary game designer Hideo Kojima. The fact that this very special action-adventure was given away on PC two years after its release caused astonishment. The Epic Games Store apparently couldn’t cope with the numerous download accesses. Complaints and expressions of displeasure rained down.
Death Stranding for free: The Epic Games Store is on its knees
There was all sorts of confusion at the start of the sensational free campaign. The Epic Games Store apparently originally listed the 2021 Director’s Cut of Death Stranding as a free game. Then the title disappeared from the start page and, according to Twitter users, was suddenly only offered in the standard version. PC Games readers report that at times Death Stranding could only be found using the search function.
The Epic Launcher also apparently bitched and had problems adding the game to users’ private libraries. Many Epic customers were unable to log in at all, which caused a lot of frustration and resentment on social media. An hour after the Death Stranding freebie kicked off, the official Epic Games Store Twitter account tweeted: “We are currently investigating an incident that is causing players trouble to log into Epic Games.” Two hours later the problem was apparently solved.

Since December 15, the Steam competitor Epic Games Store has been giving away a new free game every day for 24 hours. According to the proven advent calendar principle, the next game is always revealed on the day of publication. The first ten games often fell into the “old but gold” category.
