As expected, Avatar – The Way of Water is the undisputed number 1 in the US cinema charts for the second weekend. However, James Cameron’s new visual masterpiece (Aliens, Terminator 2, Titanic) had to contend with extremely adverse conditions. The reason for this is an arctic cold front, which has largely restricted large parts of public life in the USA in recent days. Winter storm Elliot even closed a number of cinemas. Around 80 American cinemas were apparently affected.
Avatar 2 remains number 1 in the cinema charts
According to initial estimates, Avatar – The Way of Water grossed approximately $55 million in its second weekend. Compared to the opening weekend, that means a minus of more than 59 percent at the American box office. Although this “drop” is definitely within the scope of a big blockbuster, it seems far too high for a potentially rather long-lived cinema film.
However, there are several factors to consider that may have impacted Avatar 2’s box office performance in the US. The brutal winter storm Elliot certainly did not have a positive effect on visitor behavior. Many film fans may have postponed their planned visit to the cinema so as not to have to go out into the freezing cold. Additionally, the Christmas festival falls in the second game week of Avatar – The Way of Water. This circumstance also means that the figures are not entirely meaningful.
Avatar 2 is heading towards the $300 million mark in sales
Taking into account the entire Christmas weekend, Avatar – The Way of Water should end up at around 82 million US dollars. That means a total result of an estimated 280 million US dollars. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish followed at number 2 in the American cinema charts with 24.3 million US dollars. Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody ranked #3. The late singer’s biopic grossed $10 million.
