The second game week of Avatar – The Way of Water was eagerly awaited. The immensely expensive sequel to the most successful film of all time absolutely has to perform beyond measure if further parts are to be worthwhile for Disney. However, the previous evaluation at the box office unearthed some problems that the legendary filmmaker James Cameron and his team could not have anticipated in advance. The pressure to succeed is unbelievable on Avatar 2 and at least in Germany the blockbuster was able to break a record.
Avatar – The Way of Water: Troubles in the US and China
The United States of America and the People’s Republic of China are considered to be the world’s two most important cinema markets. Success in these countries often decides whether a blockbuster will recoup its costs and also make a profit or not. And of all things, on the second weekend of Avatar – The Way of Water, events that nobody could have foreseen in advance affect the box office.
In the USA, winter storm Elliot brought public life to a virtual standstill in large parts of the country. This was also reflected in the number of visitors. The opening weekend loss was more than 59 percent, which is too much for a blockbuster that has to show staying power at the box office. In China, the corona pandemic is raging on an unprecedented scale. Here, too, the sales figures collapsed.
Avatar – The Way of Water: record numbers at the German box office
Things are looking much rosier in Europe. In France, Avatar 2 dropped just one percentage point compared to its launch weekend. This has not been the case for 33 years and symbolizes the affinity of the French for the medium of cinema.
