In a message dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Gran Turismo series, Polyphony Digital said that over 90 million copies of the games in the series have been sold to users so far. The official anniversary of Gran Turismo was celebrated on Friday, December 23rd. This day marks 25 years since Gran Turismo hit the shelves in Japan. PlayStation doesn’t release specific sales figures very often these days, so the announcement has become important.
The previous data on the number of game copies sold was published by Polyphony Digital in May 2018 – in accordance with it, 80.4 million copies of games were sold at that time. This means that over the past four and a half years, players around the world have bought about 10 million copies of Gran Turismo Sport and Gran Turismo 7. According to GTplanet, about 5-6 million copies of GT7 were sold in the first three quarters of the year – which is approximately equal to the declared GT6 sales of all time.

In addition to the post and the celebratory video, series creator Kazunori Yamauchi spoke about the creation of the game, noting that he was very lucky to start making games and even more so racing games.
“This was the department where the PlayStation was born,” says Yamauchi, “and it was here that Kutaragi-san worked feverishly to bring the PlayStation concept to life. This place was not what I had hoped for, but now, looking back, I can say that I was very lucky.”
“Gran Turismo was the first project out of almost a hundred others that I came up with when I first started my career in this industry,” he notes. “If a plan for something other than a racing game had been approved, there’s a good chance that today I could be making some other game than Gran Turismo.”
Kazunori Yamamuti mentioned his youthful ambitions to become a director. They seem to come true soon – Yamamuti is part of the production team for the Gran Turismo film, which is directed by Neill Blomkamp.
