News culture “We are open to everything”… After Wednesday’s hit on Netflix, the showrunners are already thinking about what’s next!

Wednesday was a huge success for Netflix! Breaking record after record, the series which brings the Addams Family back to the forefront has largely occupied the discussions at the end of the year. A second season has not yet been formalized, but it is already making a lot of noise.
Spoiler risk: beware, this article contains statements that potentially constitute a spoiler for viewers who have not completed season 1 of Wednesday on Netflix.
Wednesday, a global phenomenon
Wednesday was a real phenomenon, and this as soon as the first season is online. Following Wednesday’s Footsteps Addams in the school of Nevermore, the series quickly imposed itself. A week after its launch, Wednesday already accumulated more than 341 million hours viewed, and now exceeds one billion. It’s simple, the figures for the first week place Wednesday ahead of Stranger Things season 4 among the most viewed English-language series.
Created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, Mercredi mixes macabre humor with fantasy, all in a horror comedy that fits well to the world of Tim Burton, who directed part of the episodes, and whose influence was great. Overall, reviews point to a conventional but pleasant scenario to follow, a successful tragicomic base, and the excellent performance of Jenna Ortegawho embodies the young, (but determined) Wednesday.
A season 2 that is slowly becoming clearer
However, a good month after the release of this successful season, Netflix still hasn’t made a second season official.. Peter Friedlander, director of programs at Netflix US, tried to reassure fans and explain why the renewal of the series seems longer than for other programs. According to him, we can be optimistic as to the start of a new season, but the producers want take the time to understand success in order to capitalize on it and not tripping over the carpet by rushing the filming of a second season.
According to Deadline, the writers would prepare to write the screenplay of Wednesday season 2, after which production will eventually begin. Everything therefore suggests that it is only a matter of time, and the recent statements by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar only reinforce this impression. The showrunners recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, and they already have many ideas:
We would like to explore and somehow complicate all relationships in the future. The school was closed when they left, which gives us more possibilities for season two, and I think that’s something we’d love to explore. For us, the series is also about this friendship between Wednesday and Enid, which is central. We would like to explore this aspect of Wednesday’s personality more now that she has opened up (…). Then the other thing that would be really interesting would be to continue exploring the mother-daughter relationship between Wednesday and Morticia (played by Catherine Zeta-Jones, editor’s note). How will their relationship evolve after the events of Season 1?
“We are open to everything” … while waiting for the officialization, the showrunners are interested
So the idea would be deepen the characters, and that of Wednesday in particular. Taking this character further could make it possible to give more body to the story, but also to surprise the viewers. The showrunners allow themselves to imagine many possible paths, including the one on which Mercury and Enid form a pair:
We’re not going to rule anything out, of course, the characters sometimes reveal themselves, that’s what we like in the series, it’s a very organic kind of journey. We have a road map, and we have roads on this map that take you in sometimes completely unexpected directions.
We are therefore open to everything. We want to explore that friendship in every way we can, but we’re not there yet and that’s where you sometimes get misguided by the fans (…). Right now, we’re at the stage where we’re really open to seeing how these characters and this friendship will evolve. As Al said, this friendship between Wednesday and Enid is at the heart of the vision we have for the series.
We should therefore soon have news of this season 2 of Wednesday, now highly anticipated. But if this new season is officially announced, in any case, it will take a lot of patience.
