Prequel writers The Witcher Netflix talked about one of the key moments of the project related to the origin of monster slayers.
Fjall and Eile
The action of the plot of the show, we recall, takes place 1200 years before the events of the original, telling about a group of seven heroes who decide to confront golden empire. Among them are a warrior Fjall (Lawrence O’Fuaran) and bard Aye (Sophia Brown) who fall in love with each other.
As a result, it is Fjall who becomes the local “prototype of the Witcher”, sacrificing himself – however, initially the authors planned that this role would go to Eila. Screenwriter Declan De Barra noted that over time, the creators came to the idea of a “stolen sacrifice” that is made in the name of love.
The audience thinks that the fate of becoming a “witcher” is destined for Aela – this is also suspected by the characters. But Fjall cannot let her die, as he believes that her power is connected to music, which has a positive effect on the world. And he sees himself only as a killer, which leads to such a decision – even if it angers the heroine.
In addition, the showrunner of the main series Lauren Schmidt Hissrich added that it was De Barra who came up with the idea of a “proto-witcher”, which made it possible to more closely connect the events of the prequel with the original.
