With the launch of PlayStation VR2 approaching, Sony’s Hideaki Nishino explained why the VR headset is not wireless like other competing products, but can only be used when connected to the console via an appropriate USB cable. The reason is simple: this is the only way to achieve the maximum performance of the device.
Nishino spoke about this in an interview with Famitsu, in which he explained that Sony is not ruling out any possibility and is doing technical research on a wireless connection, although at the moment a cable connection is the best solution in terms of performance.
“We also understand that moving to wireless will bring a different experience, so we are always exploring all possibilities and doing technical research,” Hoshino said. “However, the question remains to what extent a wired connection can be replaced by a wireless one in terms of performance.”
Some VR headsets on the market, such as the Meta Quest 2, are wireless, meaning no cables. If, on the one hand, this is of course more practical and convenient, then on the other hand, there may be problems with stability, performance and input lag, which are absent with a cable connection.
PlayStation VR2 will be available in stores starting February 22, 2023.
