Horizon Forbidden West
We continue with another PlayStation exclusive: Horizon Forbidden West, the sequel to the really appreciated Horizon Zero Dawn, released in 2017. Yes, it took five years to discover the new adventures of Aloy, as much to say that the Guerrilla studio n did not do things by halves! It’s simple, every aspect of the base game has been improved… the direction, the gameplay, the storytelling. The result is a particularly striking adventure that we are not not ready to forget. Elder Ring
Well, you’ve definitely heard of this one: Elden Ring, the latest project from FromSoftware studio (Dark Souls, Sekiro, Bloodborne). Yes, it was he who won the famous Game of the Year prize at the Game Awards 2022. A well-deserved reward – in our opinion… For a first “open world” production, the Japanese team demonstrated a impressive know-how, managing to transpose wandering | the gameplay of a Dark Souls on a giant map ! Above all, the usual difficulty curve of the company is largely impacted. It is possible to explore at will before facing the toughest bosses. Not to mention the artistic direction, impeccable.
A Plague Tale Requiem
After an episode much appreciated by players, the A Plague Tale license is back with A Plague Tale Requiem, a direct sequel to the 2019 episode. We find Amicia and Hugo, a famous brother and sister duo, forced to go on an adventure as the little one’s mysterious illness wakes up. Enough to force them to explore a lot of cities in France, still plagued by the plague, but also to make new enemies. More than the founding component, Requiem reveals itself as a poignant story and violent, which will take its heroes even further than in the past. Carried by a high level realization and a fair writing, A Plague Tale Requiem is one of the pretty adventures of the year.
Tunic
It has the gameplay of a Dark Souls, a world full of secrets, but too cute graphics and a little fox as a hero, it’s Tunic, of course… Let’s not beat around the bush, it is undoubtedly one of our big favorites of the year. More than a homage to Zelda with challenging gameplay, it’s an absolutely remarkable exploration-puzzle game. As a hero who arrives (unannounced) on the outskirts of a vast place, you will have to understand the smallest workings of the latter. In order to help you, the developers have hidden the pages of an authentic paper game manual, like in the heyday of the NES… A nugget to discover.
Cult of the Lamb
Come on, let’s continue our little favorite section with Cult of the Lamb, developed by the Massive Monsters studio and published by the famous Devolver Digital! This is a game that mixes rogue-lite and management game, while you have to take care of a demonic cult. Yes yes, you read that right. In Cult of the Lamb you can recruit followers, build them a home, dictate sermons to them – with the goal of becoming more and more powerful. The end goal is to defeat demons who have sworn your death. For this last point, you have to go to randomly generated places, beat bosses, collect resources! A mix of genres that works like hell.
The Last of Us Part 1
In a completely different genre, here comes The Last of Us Part 1, a remake of the first episode of The Last of Us, originally released in 2013 on PS3. An almost exclusively graphical overhaul in this case. Yes, the Naughty Dog teams have brought up to date the meeting of Ellie | Joel, for a result that looks like The Last of Us Part 2 in even more beautiful ! On the gameplay side, almost nothing has changed. The remake is above all an opportunity to immerse yourself once again in the incredible adventure of these two cult characters, made even more poignant thanks to a brand new game engine. If you don’t know The Last of Us… now is the time to get started.
Gran Turismo 7
After emotions, is it speed that interests you? Then you should take a look at this Gran Turismo 7, released earlier this year on PS5 (but also PS4). “It’s the return to basics that everyone was waiting for” indicates the title of our test, with its ‘RPG car game’ side. Among other things, we find here a GT Mode still as effective. The idea is to complete quests, unlock vehicles as you go, participate in increasingly high-level races. This is of course not the only mode of the title. There is also “Sport”, focused on online competition and a whole bunch of circuits and vehicles. All in all: a very good episode that will delight fans of the genre.
Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion
While the year 2023 promises to be very busy on the side of the Final Fantasy license (a sixteenth episode, the sequel to the FFVII remake), for the moment, we have the right to Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion “remake / remaster ” from the famous PSP video game, originally released in 2008 (it doesn’t make us any younger, say so). If you don’t know the subject, it’s simple: the project takes place seven years before the story of Final Fantasy VII and allows you to understand a lot of things about the “lore” of this episode. Here, the player embodies Zack, a member of the SOLDIER in the same way as Cloud et Sephiroth. On the side of the scenario, nothing has changed, but there is something new for the gameplay and the visuals.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2
It comes back every year and yet often promises to be a must: it’s Call of Duty. For 2022, we had the right to Modern Warfare 2, sequel to the reboot of Modern Warfare (2019 version). The opportunity to reunite with Task Force 141 – featuring stars like Ghost, Price, etc – as a new threat is about to arise. As usual, there is a fairly striking realism and very successful shooting sensations, whether in solo or multiplayer. Not too many surprises then, it’s all good, with even a Warzone 2.0 which (also) works wonders on its side. In short, Call of Duty launches a new era in a successful way, and it is clearly pleasing.
Rollerdrome
Want more guns, explosions all over the place? So let us introduce you to Rollerdrome, the latest originality from the Roll 7 (Olli Olli World) studio. Basically you’re in the future, and humanity is obsessed with a new kind of sport: people, on rollerblades – in arenas – where the outcome is literally lethal. In all of this, you play as a Rider who will gradually become the best in his discipline. But in short, Rollerdrome shines above all with its gameplay style and super nice to hold. In addition to rolling upside down, upside down, on the walls, to have a lot of weapons available, it is necessary for example to perform figures to recover ammunition.
SIFU
We end with one of the nice surprises of the beginning of 2022: SIFU – developed by the Sloclap studio (Absolver). Nice surprise because featuring an original concept, a truly mastered gameplay. Basically, here you want to take revenge on a Kung-Fu master and have to go through several areas to do so. But, each time you die, your character is getting old, having the effect of shrinking your life but increasing your strength. All in all, it will therefore be necessary to do everything and go as far as possible without failing! As you go, you will also be able to unlock new martial arts skills and techniques. In short, it is original and totally well done.
