Although they are synonymous with Sonic The Hedgehoglongtime gamers might perhaps remember that way back in 2003 the Sonic Team he tried to experiment with something different, publishing Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg are GameCube.
The work produced by SEGA was a rather particular Platform, which saw the protagonist Billy roam around the scenarios interacting with a large number of egg scattered across the environments, exploiting their peculiar characteristics to face the enemies who tried to hinder his path. Although it did not achieve great critical acclaim at the time of its publication, Billy Hatcher’s first and last adventure still managed to collect moderate acclaim among players, albeit not enough to push the Japanese giant to invest further in the IP.
However, not everyone has forgotten that curious Platform, not even its creator Shun Nakamura who, through Twitter, expressed the desire to want to make a second episode sooner or later, if only the opportunity presents itself. A thought apparently shared by many of his followers, with the post exceeding 7,000 likes and surprising Nakamura himself, who said he was very happy with the reaction from the fans.
A return of Billy Hatcher, however, seems extremely unlikely given the limited popularity of the game globally and the fact that the first title has now almost 20 years behind. The character has however been reused by SEGA within its other productions, such as for example Sonic Riders Zero Gravity e Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing.
However, Nakamura is not the only member of the Japanese company in the mood for a revival: Takashi Iizuka always dreams of making Sonic Adventure 3 and thus of carrying on this specific and iconic series born on Dreamcast.
