Scheduled for the month of April 2023 at the cinema, Super Mario Bros. the film is a particularly eagerly awaited work. It must be said that the work carried out by the Illumination Entertainment studio and Nintendo looks very promising and is already generating significant excitement: can you imagine that it is Netflix that could recover the broadcasting rights in the future… and that an exit window has just been disclosed by a third party.
Finally the dream Super Mario movie?
In just two trailers and a few images and clips, Super Mario Bros. the film has become one of the most anticipated feature films of 2023. It must be said that the public has been waiting for ages an adaptation worthy of the name and this one will therefore be in CGI, provided by the talented studio Illumination Entertainment (Me, Despicable & Mean).
For the little story, this talented firm was quickly acquired by Universal Pictures, becoming one of its most prominent branches with Dreamworks. And it just so happens that in 2021Netflix signed a deal with Universal for both Illumination and Dreamworks animated films to land on its platform as a priority after a four-month period.
See you in October 2023… but not in France
During these four months, Universal can broadcast its films wherever it pleases and in the case of Super Mario Bros. the film will be on Peacock. Previously, Dreamworks and Illumination films offered on Peacock 70 days after their first theatrical release.
Assuming this pattern repeats itself for the Mario adaptation (a theory put forward in a report by TV Show Ace), it would therefore be available on Netflix in October 2023, which will pick up the project after the four months of exclusive to Peacock.
Attention, this would not concern France but rather the United States, where the chronology of the media is very different. In France, it will be necessary to wait until 2024, even if it is always possible to circumvent this rule via a VPN, a completely legal option. We will wait anyway for an officialization to see more clearly.
