Real-time strategy was never really dead, but after the golden years with many RTS series there were at least phases with a lot of idle time. In view of projects like Tempest Rising or The Great War: Western Front, real-time strategy is very present – and this is where DORF comes into play.
What does DORF stand for?
The full game is called DORF: Real-Time Strategic Conflict and is described as an RTS game for PC that takes classic RTS games from the 90s as a model, but adds new mechanics to them. The game will eventually feature land, air and sea combat and feature three “unique” factions to play with, each with a single-player campaign, according to the game’s website. There should also be multiplayer. Two developers are behind it, but the project does not run via Steam Early Access, but via Patreon.
Many of the details about the game are then also hidden behind a Patreon access, where you can also get involved in the development as a supporter: alternatively get one via twitter a good insight into the game concept. The fact that the gameplay shown so far looks very much like C&C is also due to the fact that, according to the company, it uses a heavily modified version of the OpenRA engine that was developed precisely for such games. This conveys the feel of well-known 2D RTS games, especially from the 90s. You develop and control armies, build bases and collect resources.

Special mechanisms presented
But you also want to integrate mechanisms that are rarely found in RTS, including a tunnel system that should allow units to dig tunnel networks under the map. This can be used to sneak around units or own underground bases. There is also a system that allows your units to storm enemy buildings and fight the enemy garrison inside before capturing them.

The development roadmap includes an overhaul of unit attack logic to allow for multi-turret units and other complex unit actions. There are also plans to upgrade the game’s rendering engine to allow for real-time lighting and shadows, as well as better visual effects. A dynamic, destructible environment, including deadly fires that spread and burn down trees and structures, also sounds exciting.
