Rumors surfaced late last month that Naughty Dog creative head Neil Druckmann would move directly into The Last of Us Part 3 as his next project. rarely penetrating the world of video games, was perceived ambiguously. Understandably, some were excited about the new TLOU, but others may have hoped to take a break from Druckmann’s dark post-apocalyptic world and his ambiguous vision for the story.
Rumors about The Last of Us Part 3 are starting to look a little shaky. In his New Year’s message, Neil Druckmann specifically urged fans to beware of insiders as much of what they report is false. While Druckmann doesn’t specifically mention TLOU3, it’s really the only big rumor that’s been circulating about Druckmann and Naughty Dog lately, so there’s a good chance he’s talking about that.
Of course, perhaps Druckmann is just trying to muddy the waters, and TLOU3 really is the next game. We’ll have to wait and see. Back in 2020, as Naughty Dog was wrapping up TLOU2, Druckmann said he wasn’t sure if the next installment in the series would be a third installment or a new game. What we know for sure is that a writing team has already been assembled for the next installment, and that it could be more TV-like and have an episodic structure.
Plus, Druckmann already has a lot of announced things he’s busy with, including the HBO series The Last of Us, which debuts on January 15, and new multiplayer project The Last of Us, which doesn’t currently have a reliable release date.
