Sony and Microsoft neck and neck according to estimates
After a strong year in 2021 which allowed it to win the publisher of the year award from Metacritic, Microsoft lagged behind a conquering Sony which chained major releases in 2022. While all eyes are now on 2023, VGChartz, the famous site specializing in the compilation of data related to the sale of video games, publishes its sales estimates between the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series models available in the US market. The least we can say is that the result is tight.

According to VGChartz, the PlayStation 5 would be just over a million machines ahead of its direct competitor after two years of putting the new consoles into circulation on American soil. If these figures tend to demonstrate once again that Sony is indeed the leader across the Atlantic, they also insist on the good health of Microsoft in its territory of birth, for those who doubt it. Even if these figures are to be put into perspective, they can help to better understand why Sony refused to increase the price of its machine in the United States, a country where competition with Xbox is particularly strong.
Caution is a guess
Looking at these results based on VGChartz guesses, we might be tempted to be impressed with Microsoft. The company headed by Satya Nadella would ensure a good positioning without having delivered a large exclusive AAA cartridge in 2022, while adopting a philosophy weakening – supposedly – the sale of its hardware via an ecosystem accessible on mobile, PC and even connected TV. These estimates should be taken with all the necessary perspective. and cannot yet identify a trend since the production concerns of game consoles have hit the two giants in 2022. The one that has sold the most is possibly the one that has produced and delivered the most.
In the absence of official figures from the Redmond firm, observers must therefore content themselves with the estimates of VGChartz, whose methods have already been criticized several times. In April 2022, Aarong Greenberg, Xbox’s marketing manager, published the figures from VGChartz on his official account, giving credit to the site’s data. The situation is nevertheless absurd: to see an official using third-party estimates rather than providing official sales figures is staggering. According to analyst firm Ampere, in June 2022, the Xbox Series X|S would have sold 13.8 million copies compared to the 21 million PlayStation 5 in the world.
Despite the absence of statements from Microsoft, it is worth remembering that the Xbox One would have fought well against the PlayStation 4 in the United States. Some estimates claim that the gap between the two machines would amount to less than 5 million consoles, which would not be as large as expected.
