Two billion dollars! Legendary filmmaker James Cameron (Aliens, Terminator 2, Titanic) called out this proud sum to illustrate how much the sequel to the highest-grossing film of all time needs to bring in at the worldwide box office in order to be profitable. A look at the list of the most successful films of all time shows that this is anything but an easy task. In the history of cinema, only five productions have grossed more than 2 billion US dollars. In addition to Avatar 2’s predecessor, Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, Titanic and Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame made it.
Will Avatar 2 Break the Magical $2 Billion Mark?
Avatar – The Way of Water is poised to join this illustrious circle of the highest-grossing motion pictures of all time. The first part was less convincing in 2009 due to its sophisticated plot and masterfully told story – above all the fascinating three-dimensional experience attracted the masses to the cinemas. In some cases, first-aid tents had to be set up in front of large multiplex cinemas because the breathtaking 3D technology made cinema-goers feel like they were in bloom.
But can such a success based on new technology be repeated in 2023? After three weeks of Avatar 2 in cinemas, this question can definitely be answered with a “yes”. Even in times of viewing habits with 4K, OLED and virtual reality, you can apparently inspire an audience of millions with brilliant 3D in the cinema and charge well over 10 euros for admission. At least that’s what the numbers at the international box office say for Avatar 2.
Avatar 2: How much has the cinema blockbuster already brought in?
Avatar – The Way of Water has already grossed around 450 million US dollars after a somewhat bumpy start in the USA. Added to this is a whopping $957 million from international markets after the third weekend.
Avatar 2’s total box office is now an incredible $1.4 billion. In the list of the most successful films of all time, you are constantly heading towards the top ten.

Harry Potter in the cinema: A reboot with new actors is not absolutely necessary
Rumors of a planned reboot of the Harry Potter films are causing a stir. How can a much-needed restart succeed?
In the next few days, Top Gun: Maverick should leave DEN Blockbuster 2022 behind. A huge advantage for Avatar 2 is that unlike many other big blockbusters, such as Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, it also launched in China. The current situation around Covid is noticeably slowing down success in cinemas there, but last weekend Avatar 2 was even able to increase by 42 percent in the most important cinema market outside the USA. How far the wings of success will carry James Cameron’s new work up the eternal leaderboards will be seen in the coming weeks. It remains exciting!
