Tesla is often stingy when it comes to official images, and this is even more the case for technical diagrams. But Tesla has just had the rug pulled from under it with several leaked photos of the design of the Tesla Semi, its electric truck. What bring us a lot of technical information.
After no less than six years of waiting, the first Tesla Semis were delivered last December to one of its biggest customers, PepsiCo. The Tesla Semi electric truck is interesting in more than one way, since, on the one hand, it is one of the first electric trucks on the market, and on the other hand, it has very interesting technical characteristics.
The law of silence around numbers
But as usual at Tesla, the technical information, you have to go get it. For several years now, Tesla has not communicated on the power of some of its cars, nor on the capacity of the batteries.
Even if a quick search on the Internet provides the information, it is a way for Tesla to protect itself after some concerns related to figures announced on old models and which were not necessarily accurate.
Either way, the reported numbers for the Tesla Semi are pretty impressive. Even if the size of the battery has not been specified (or even its weight), a quick calculation shows that it is more than 900 kWh. Elon Musk had announced a range of around 800 kilometers with a load of 37 tonnes, but also great efficiency with a consumption of only 1.7 kWh per mile, which is approximately equivalent to 105 kWh/100 km.
An impressive battery pack
If Tesla gives few figures, the brand gives even fewer technical diagrams. But on Twitter, a user posted the technical details with the design and components of the Tesla Semi. The images appear to be from from the truck parts catalog. This confirms in particular that the battery is located under the cabin at the base of the vehicle.
On the other hand, the design of the battery pack seems quite different from what we knew before. The battery pack appears to have nine large modules in two different sizes. Those in the middle seem significantly larger than those on the sides, certainly for a story of mass distribution.
Some Semi porn for those that need it on this New Years eve.

The modules are also and logically much taller than any other Tesla battery pack. On a Model 3, for example, the battery packs are as tall as a row of cells. Even if there are no technical details revealed, our American colleagues from Electrek evoke a kind of “stacking” old Tesla Model S battery modules.
There are still a lot of unanswered questions surrounding these batteries, even though the technical schematics are revealed. For example, we still don’t know for sure which cell Tesla uses in its truck. Perhaps it uses the famous new 4680 cells, but Elon Musk had previously indicated that this would not necessarily be the case.
