In July 2020, Microsoft announced a brand new spin-off of the popular Fable series. Since then, however, little has been heard about the development of the game. In 2021, at least, we learned that Fable had been in development for four years at that point, but that only made the sparse updates from Microsoft even more questionable.
What about the new offshoot of the Fable series?
With no release date in sight, many fans are understandably wondering if there were any problems developing Fable (buy now €32.77). Among other things, a rumor was spread on 4Chan, according to which the latest version of Fable was described as “unplayable” by the developer studio Playground Games. The developers are said to have started development from scratch and also switched to the Unreal Engine.
There is currently no official statement from Microsoft or Playground Games on the rumors, but hopeful Fable fans can still rest easy. Head of GamesIndustry.biz Christopher Dring, who is usually quite knowledgeable about such things, explained on Twitterthat the rumors are simply not true. However, the journalist did not provide any more information.

A magical version of Stardew Valley is coming soon! That’s why the life simulation of the Ex-Fable developers is so interesting.
However, the 4Chan rumor isn’t the first time development issues at Playground Games have been reported. For example, Jez Corden from Windows Central mentioned just last month that Microsoft probably has an internal rule about engines that can be used for games, which caused problems in the development of Halo Infinite and Fable. It is difficult to assess the exact status of the new Fable offshoot at the moment.
