In anticipation of AMD’s statement on overheating of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics cards and the subsequent decrease in their performance (which should have appeared yesterday, but came out only today), Igor Vallossek from Igor’sLAB shared his research on the problem.
As previously reported by another researcher, the problem of overheating and throttling of video cards lies in the evaporation chamber, which should cool the chip. In an email received from AMD, one of the buyers said that an official announcement was to be made yesterday.
“Supposedly, the reason is in the evaporation chamber. Several parties involved. Currently, 4-6 batches and thousands of video cards are under suspicion. Only MBA cards are affected,” the letter said.
During the sale of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, hundreds of video cards were recalled, including those integrated into computer assemblies. The issue only affects the RX 7900 XTX model and only the AMD/MBA reference design. It does not affect any of the video cards with a non-standard cooling system. The reference model RX 7900 XT with the cut-down Navi 31 GPU is also unaffected.
“Only the feature-limited vapor chamber of the RX 7900 XTX is affected by a major issue requiring a graphics card recall. This is due to the fact that not only the hotspot, but also the storage tank can reach temperatures of up to 110°C, operating well above the allowed temperature limit.” – Igor Vallossek
AMD has traditionally prioritized reference card manufacturing over partner cards in the early weeks of new Radeon model launches. Therefore, at the start of sales on the market, there are so few announcements and available options. Having sold thousands of reference cards to users and partners, the company found itself in a difficult position. AMD currently offers exchanges or refunds to individuals and channel partners.

Here’s what AMD’s official statement says, which did come out today:
“We are working to determine the cause of the unexpected performance issue with AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics cards. Based on our observations to date, we believe the issue is related to the thermal solution used in AMD’s reference design and occurs in a limited number of cards sold. We are working to resolve this issue for the affected maps. Customers experiencing this unexpected limitation should contact AMD Support.”
Why is no one buying Radeon graphics cards?
