As predicted, Avatar: The Way of the Water was the highest-grossing film of 2022, surpassing the $1.4 billion record set a few months ago by Top Gun: Maverick, Paramount Pictures’ acclaimed blockbuster starring Tom Cruise.
James Cameron’s sequel crossed the $1 billion mark at the international box office ($1.025 billion, to be exact, not counting Wednesday, Jan. 4), which, when added to the domestic box office, brings the global total to $1.5 billion. Avatar 2 has officially surpassed Top Gun: Maverick ($1.489 billion) to become the highest-grossing film of 2022 and the second highest-grossing film of the pandemic era.
Internationally, Avatar 2 became the ninth highest-grossing film of all time, jumping from number 11 to overtake Fast and Furious 8 and Jurassic World in just 21 days in theaters.
Obviously, even though Avatar 2 has officially turned a profit, the “winning lap” will be represented by hitting the 2 billion mark and then overtaking Spider-Man: No Way Home. It will be the first film to cross that threshold since the pandemic, and the first since Avengers: Endgame, a mission that is currently not impossible for a James Cameron sequel.
