But on these days, the long wait for the Playstation 5 only apparently came to an end. The next-gen console from Sony was practically unavailable. After the devices of the pre-orders were delivered, there was a lull at first. The corona pandemic and a Suez Canal that was too narrow had severely disrupted the close-knit supply chains, and lockdowns also led to delivery bottlenecks for important components. The drama surrounding the availability of the Playstation 5 dragged on until 2023. But that should be the end of it now.
Electronics trade fair CES: Sony’s announcement makes Playstation 5 fans breathe easier
The first two years of the Playstation 5 (buy now 729.00 €) ensure a novelty in the history of video games. Never before has a console been hit by massive delivery problems for such a long period of time. Even competitor Microsoft, who at the same time sent its Xbox Series models X and S into the race for the favor of gamers, got the availability of the devices under control after similar difficulties.
Not so with Sony. Until recently, the console was almost exclusively online, and then often only available in expensive bundles with current games such as Horizon Forbidden West, FIFA 23 or God of War: Ragnarök. Anyone who just walked into the local Media Markt or Saturn to treat themselves to the high-end console usually found themselves in front of empty shelves. These times should now finally belong to the past, as Sony explained at the electronics trade fair CES.
Playstation 5 should be reliably available from now on
In the last two years, the patience of loyal Playstation fans has been strained badly. On PC Games we will regularly inform you as part of our news reporting as soon as new PS5 devices are available online. But often enough it only lasted a few seconds before it said “sold out” once more. It was not uncommon for numerous devices to end up with resellers who were not at all interested in a Playstation 5 themselves, but offered the console for sale on portals such as Ebay at a completely overpriced price.

According to Sony, such moments of frustration should no longer occur in the future. As Playstation boss Jim Ryan announced at this year’s electronics trade fair CES, all delivery problems have been resolved. “Any person who wants to buy a Playstation 5 should be able to find one in a retailer,” anywhere in the world. It is to be hoped that the console will again be offered individually in the future, without the forced bundle with controller and full-price title. Then, more than two years after the release of the PS5, something like normality would finally have returned.
