The past year will be remembered by Henry Cavill fans for a long time. In just a few weeks, the popular British actor not only lost his leading role on the Netflix series The Witcher, he also had to give up what is arguably the most famous red cloak in pop culture. Since filmmaker James Gunn (The Suicide Squad, Guardians of the Galaxy) took over the helm at Marvel’s competitor DC, there has been a cutback that has led, among other things, to the sacking of Henry Cavill as Superman. Plans to do so have apparently existed at Warner for several years.
Superman: Henry Cavill was set to be replaced as early as 2018
After Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Black Adam, it finally hit Henry Cavill. The British actor has no future in DC, instead James Gunn is planning a reboot starring a young Superman. Apparently, however, efforts have already been made in the past to replace Henry Cavill as Krypton’s son.
As a Variety report suggested, 2018 was looking to cast another actor as Superman. According to insiders, Tobey Emmerich, then-boss of Warner Bros., would have preferred anyone other than Henry Cavill. It is not known exactly what prompted those responsible for the media company to take this view. However, it could explain why there hasn’t been a second part of Man of Steel, Henry Cavill’s debut as Superman, for all these years.
