On the Silk Road
Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom is the fifth film adaptation in real shots of the adventures of our favorite Gauls. Beyond these Live Action feature films, two other more recent projects have emerged with Alexandre Astier (Kaamelott) at the helm: The Domain of the Gods (2014) and The Secret of the Magic Potion (2018). The Middle Empire is a comedy directed by Guillaume Canet and scripted by the latter in collaboration with Julien Hervé and Philippe Mechelen.
Pathé has once again offered itself an audience of renowned actors and actresses to bring the new adventure of an icon of Franco-Belgian comics to the big screen. The cast is made up of Guillaume Canet (Asterix), Gilles Lellouche(Obelix), Vincent Cassel (César), Jonathan Cohen (Graindemais), Julie Chen (la princesse Fu Yi), Leanna Chea (Tat Han) or Marion Cotillard (Cleopatra) and Ramzy Bedia (Corncob). Added to this is a shower of cameos, including that of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
It should be noted that Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom, unlike the previous “live” films, is based on a new scenario and not an adaptation of one of the many albums imagined by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. Guillaume Canet’s film reappropriates this universe and stages characters known to everyone (or almost) as well as new ones during a journey on the Silk Road.
Here is the official synopsis of Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom which will be released in theaters on February 1, 2023.
We are in 50 BC The Empress of China is imprisoned following a coup fomented by Deng Tsin Quin, a traitorous prince. Helped by Graindemaïs, the Phoenician merchant, and by his faithful warrior Tat Han, Princess Fu Yi, only daughter of the Empress, fled to Gaul to ask for help from the two valiant warriors Asterix and Obelix, endowed with superhuman strength thanks to their magic potion. Our two inseparable Gauls of course agree to help the Princess to save her mother and liberate her country. And here they are all on their way for a great adventure to China. But Caesar and his powerful army, always thirsty for conquest, have also taken over the leadership of the Middle Empire… – Pathé Films

On January 5, 2023, Pathé uploaded a fresh trailer for Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom, a Franco-French production which, as a reminder, cost a whopping 65 million euros. This budget makes it the ninth most expensive film in the history of French cinema. The first trailer had aroused strong reactions from Internet users, and the second took a new volley of green wood on Twitter. Here is an example of critical feedback… each saltier than the other:
