Avatar 2 would finally already be very profitable. This ensures the future of its multiple sequels.
Remember, a few days ago, James Cameron publicly readjusted certain estimates that were found to be incorrect: While he first claimed that to be truly profitable, Avatar 2 had to exceed 2 billion dollars worldwide and thus become the third or fourth highest-grossing film in cinema history, the director backtracked. His feature film will in fact only need to be one of the ten highest-grossing films of all time. This would then correspond to approximately 1.5 billion dollars at the worldwide box office. “I was a bit inaccurate,” he told Chinese media.
On the first day of January 2023, Avatar: The Way of the Water already accumulated $ 1.378 billion in box office revenue worldwide. That’s $421.6 million generated in the US and $956.9 million in the rest of the world. Today, unsurprisingly, the film would finally be completely profitable. According to Puck News reporter Matthew Belloni, Avatar: The Way of the Water reportedly passed the $1.4 billion box office threshold. Enough to easily ensure the release of all the planned suites.
Ambitious sequels
The success of Avatar 2 is well established; it is the feature film that gathered the most people in theaters in 2022 (ahead of Top Gun Maverick). If everything goes as Cameron planned, we should be entitled to a new episode of Avatar every two years: Avatar 3 (already filmed) in 2024, Avatar 4 (partly filmed) in 2026 and Avatar 5 for 2028 of which only the script is finalized for the time being. The sequel is expected to be darker than its predecessors. “I want to reveal the Nav’is from another angle because for the moment, I have only shown their good sides” confided James Cameron in the columns of 20 Minutes.
According to the director himself, the last parts of Avatar could be the best of the lot, the first serving as an introduction before attacking “the main course”. In an interview with TheDirect site, we learn that the third feature film should focus on the Ash People, the People of the ashes and therefore of the fire. A point of view that will present the Na’vis from a whole new angle. See you at the end of next year, in December 2024, to find out what will happen to Jake Sully and his family.
