01/06/2023 at 11:03 am by Thilo Bayer – Faster than expected, Avatar has made a big leap in the box office. Global grossing now stands at $1.51 billion, overtaking not only Top Gun Maverick but Furious 7 as well.
It then went faster than expected. With Wednesday’s update, Avatar not only broke the $1.5 billion mark in global sales, it also set several records.
Avatar 2 the highest grossing movie starting in 2022
The $1.51 billion that has now been reached means that it has finally overtaken the highest-grossing film of 2022 to date, Top Gun Maverick. So far, the Top Gun revival with Tom Cruise was the most successful film launched last year, and Avatar 2 can now add this title. In Germany, James Cameron’s new strip has long been the most successful film of 2022, ahead of Minions 2 – even though the film only ran for a good two weeks in the calendar year. Exciting: Just yesterday, James Cameron made it clear that Avatar 2 doesn’t have to import 2 billion box office.
But that’s not all: Since the places on the all-time best list between 9th and 15th place are only a good 100 million US dollars apart, Avatar 2 creates another important mark with the latest box office update: Currently you are getting up 10th place in the global leaderboard. Furious 7, previously in the illustrious top 10, has also been overtaken and relegated to 11th place. Next up is The Avengers from 2012 – the current number 9 in the top list has only two million more sales than Avatar 2, which should already be done with tomorrow’s update in the box office results. The way is much further up to 8th place, Lion King from 2019 is enthroned here with at least 1.66 billion US dollars. This place should be unreachable for at least a few more days.

Internationally, Avatar 2 has already reached number 9 on the all-time best list. In Europe, Avatar 2 is the most successful film of the pandemic era, the previous leader Spider-Man: No Way Home has now been replaced. In the all-time ranking, Avatar WoW is already in 5th place in Europe. So you can see how successful the film is in this country. After the USA and China, France, Korea and Germany are the most successful markets for Avatar 2.
