At CES 2023, BMW showed off its latest e-ink project. The automaker showed the car i Vision Dee, which is able to change its color. At the same time, the number of possible shades reaches 32.
Let’s note, earlier BMW already demonstrated similar technology of automobile electronic ink. During the CES 2022 exhibition, a car was shown covered with many microcapsules of electronic ink. These capsules were filled with negatively charged white and positively charged black pigments. This allowed the car to be painted in various shades of gray. But this time, thanks to the collaboration with E Ink, the opportunity to change different colors is offered. Moreover, the shades can be individually changed and adjusted for different parts and panels of the case.
There are no less than 240 ePaper segments throughout the body of the concept. Not only the body of the car, but also the rims can change the color. So i Vision Dee can be considered the automotive equivalent of a chameleon. BMW says a “nearly endless variety of patterns” is possible, and switching to a different color scheme is done in seconds.
BMW has not said anything about the prospects of introducing full-color electronic ink to production models of its cars.
