The engineering teams from BMW and E Ink performed a stunning demonstration at CES 2023. The i Vision Dee concept car changes colors in seconds. We were able to witness this visual experience.

BMW took advantage of CES 2023 in Las Vegas to unveil the i Vision Dee concept, which foreshadows the next generation of electric cars scheduled for 2025. On the program: a revolutionary head-up display and some bonuses inherited from a virtual world. But, it is clear that BMW had another surprise in store for us.
At CES 2022, we were able to discover the BMW iX Flow concept: an electric car with electronic ink paint from the company e-ink. This year, BMW has gone much further.
Concretely, BMW has entirely wrapped its i Vision Dee concept in E Ink. This concept makes it possible to use 32 colors, with animations on the bodywork. Before explaining how it works, watch our posted video on Twitter.

As Numerama explains, it is the same technology that is used in our readers. These e-ink displays don’t just work in black and white, they also support color. BMW has used pigments encapsulated in the bodywork which are activated according to the intensity of the current traveled.
The possibilities are immense…
We obviously see the possibility of personalizing his car according to his tastes or his mood. However, this technology could be used for security needs, for example, for police or emergency vehicles which must be easily identifiable. It can also be used by the police to camouflage vehicles, or for brands that want to create advertising or promotional operations.

BMW has done a lot of development work to manage the cutouts and power supply of the various panels, and find the right electrical dosage to display one or the other color uniformly.
The body surface of the BMW i Vision Dee is divided into 240 E Ink sections, each of which is individually controlled. This makes it possible to create and modify an almost unlimited variety of designs in seconds. Moreover, the laser cutting process used to cut the films and the design of the electronic controls were developed in collaboration with E Ink.
The result is simply stunning. We are now wondering what is the next step to imagine, one day, its application on production vehicles. We can always hope so, in any case.
