With Gladiator, Ridley Scott created an impressive film at the turn of the millennium. In the meantime, a second part of the hit film from 2000 has been confirmed. It is not yet known what exactly it will be about. The film should probably play 25 years after part one and revolve around the older Lucius Verus. And it is also known who will follow in Russell Crowe’s footsteps. In a casting, a very special actor prevailed against shooting star Timothee Chalamet (Dune, Call Me by Your Name) and Hollywood talent Miles Teller (Top Gun Maverick, Whiplash). You can find out who that is, in which role we will see him in the cinema and when Gladiator 2 will start in the cinemas in the article!
Paul Mescal soll Lucius Verus spielen
As the usually well-informed industry journal The Hollywood Reporter reports, a leading actor has now been found for Gladiator (buy now) 2. Accordingly, Ridley Scott chose Paul Mescal, who recently attracted attention with the touching Oscar favorite Aftersun. He is supposed to play in the sequel to the 23-year-old film Lucius Verus.
In the first part, Lucius is a 13-year-old boy and the son of Lucilla and the nephew of villain Commodus, who was played by Joaquin Phoenix at the time. In the first film, Lucius is fascinated by the eponymous gladiator Maximus, played by Russell Crowe. And now, in the second part, played 25 years later, the gladiator from childhood should probably still shape him.
Mescal outperforms Hollywood greats like Timothee Chalamet
As revealed on Twitter by Borys Kit, a writer for the Hollywood Reporter, Paul Mescal has beaten real Hollywood stars in the casting for the lead role in Gladiator 2: Alongside Timothee Chalamet, who is best known for DUNE and Call Me by Your Name knows, some other actors also wanted the role:
So is Miles Teller, which many from Top Gun: Maverick or Whiplash also auditioned for the role. And Austin Butler, known from the Elvis biopic or the Tarantino film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Richard Madden, known as Robb Stark from Game of Thrones, probably wanted the role.
Ultimately, however, Ridley Scott chose Paul Mescal. He’s having a pretty steep career in Hollywood. After his breakthrough with the series Normal People, he is currently in cinemas in the acclaimed film Aftersun. Filming for the Gladiator sequel is scheduled to start this year, but there is no start date yet.
