South Korean Internet company Kakao has announced a plan to compensate users of its KakaoTalk messenger who were injured due to a fire at the SK C&C data center in October last year. The plan provides for the distribution of three packages of emoticons as a general compensation to all users of the KakaoTalk messenger.
It should be noted that of the three “gifted” emoji sets, only one is provided for completely free use, and the free use of the rest expires in 90 days. The company also offered 3 million vouchers for one month of free access to its Talk Drawer Plus data backup service. After the end of the free period, users will be automatically subscribed to the paid version of the service.

In addition, businesses reporting a loss of less than 300,000 won ($240) due to a disruption will receive 30,000 won ($24) in damages, and those reporting a loss of less than 500,000 won ($399, 2), the payout will be 50,000 won ($39.92). Those who report a loss of income due to failure above 500,000 won may receive additional compensation after their claims are verified. The company will also provide two coupons for the Kakao Makers platform.
The fire led to the shutdown of 32,000 servers, key Kakao services stopped working, including KakaoTalk with an average audience of 45 million people (the population of the whole country is almost 52 million people), there were failures in the operation of the KakaoPay payment system, postal service, taxi and other company services. It took five days to fully restore the functionality of all services. To date, this incident is the largest data center in the world. The compensation options offered by Kakao have been criticized by users.
