When you think of adapting a game for the big or small screen, what comes to mind? Well, personally I always think “for God’s sake, stay true to the original story”, which of course almost never happens.
Obviously, for there to be an adaptation of a game, so often based on completely unrealistic things, you have to have an open mind and accept that there are things that have to be scratched. But… Scratching things that serve as the basis of the whole story… It’s silly!
Well, by all indications, in HBO’s The Last of Us series, it seems that there will be no spores, that is, the main reason why the “infection” has spread, and humanity has come very close to the ” The end”.

So The Last of Us, the series, is going to be a big change from the games. Who says it is Craig Mazin, executive producer of the project, who confirmed the removal of the ‘spores’.
Spores? What is this?
Well, in case you didn’t remember already, the ‘spores’ remain, and they are very visible in closed and dark spaces, being the main cause of infection in humans. Incidentally, this is exactly why the characters need to wear a mask during the game.
In short, these spores are one of the biggest reasons why the world ended, or came very close, in The Last of Us games. Since every time a human inhaled them, he turned into a voracious and bloodthirsty monster, which only thought about attacking, and spreading the infection.
Why do we have this removal?
“We are trying our best to maintain what is really important, but always with the notion of what an adaptation of this level is. For example, small details like spores. In the game, when we find them, we have to put on a gas mask. However, in real life, this makes little sense, because the spores would spread everywhere, and as such, the characters would have to wear a mask 100% of the time.
So we decided to find another way for the fungus to spread in the series.”
Conclusion
Personally, I’m already irritated by the series, especially by this explanation. A game is just that, a game. It doesn’t have to make sense… The series just has to follow what’s in the game.
With this “joke”, we will miss important scenes that we saw happening in the games, such as broken masks, which led to important discoveries. But anyway… I’ll have faith that this will still be something useful.
