In 2019, Rian Johnson, who was behind the camera for Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, was released at the cinema A Knives Out, a humorous action and investigation film. Very well received, the film has recently been accompanied by a sequel called Glass Onion and directly published on Netflix.
Glass Onion: a new survey, and a new carton
Posted on Netflix December 23Glass Onion quickly became the third most watched movie on Netflix, behind Red Notice and Don’t Look Up. After the acquisition of the rights in 2021, Netflix therefore has the exclusivity of the films of the license, even if it was briefly screened in 696 American theaters. If this is a Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion is autonomous and can be seen without having seen the first film.
Spectators will miss a few references, but nothing inconvenient to follow. the new adventures of Benoît Blanc, played by a Daniel Craig who has now returned his 007 costume. In this film, several friends of the billionaire Miles Bron receive a mysterious box, which can only be opened after solving a puzzle. The group communicates and ends up discovering an invitation to go to a private island in Greece to participate in an investigation around a fictional murder.
For his part, the famous detective Benoît Blanc is bored, and spends his days playing Among Us. He nevertheless ends up receiving the mysterious box and goes to Greece. Then begins a real treasure hunt, where everyone has their little secrets, hides their intentions, and becomes suspicious for the other participants. Unfortunately, everything changes when one of the participants dies suddenlyoffering Benoît Blanc the opportunity to shine.
The third film already on the way!
Directed by Rian Johnson, the film also features Steve Yedlin, already present on A Knives Out, Nathan Johnson (music) or even Bob Duscay (editing). On the casting side, it’s very heavy, with Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Jessica HenwickJanelle Monae, Kate Hudson, Ethan Hawke or even Hugh GrantKareem Abdul-Jabbar, the former NBA star, and Serena Williams.
With a score of 93% sur Rotten Tomatoes, the film will not be the last since a third film has been signed. It is also reported that thelack of news about the Star Wars trilogy of Johnson is due to this commitment. But where is this third film? It was the director himself who brought the answer to this question during an interview with Wired. Asked about the fact that the films do not necessarily follow each other, he gave some indications on his way of working on the adventures of Benoît Blanc:
A lot of what I’m trying to do, because I’m starting to write the next one, is just trying to clear my head and think about what’s on my mind right now. Hopefully this somehow translates to what we all have in mind right now in terms of culture. (…)
It’s such a weird time right now…. I’m just starting to work on writing the next crime movie, and it’ll be a few years before it comes out and God only knows what the landscape will be like then. I feel like trying to guess where we’ll be next might be a wild ride.
So we now know that the next adventure of the famous detective is a writing lesson, and that the process seems quite iterative. Difficult to know more for the moment because, questioned on the ideas that he could have already had, the director replied that he had nothing to reveal, even asking, with a touch of humor, if the journalist had ideas for him. However, the cases of Elon Musk and Twitter have been discussed a lot during the interview, which could possibly indicate a direction currently being followed.
Other themes, including that of AI development, were also discussed. The release is not expected for a while, Rian Johnson speaking “years”, but the fact that the writing has started allows us to say that the wait shouldn’t be too long. If we refer to the time elapsed between the first two films, we could see “Knives Out 3” coming out in 2025.
