Xbox Game Pass creates new possibilities, but it can also be scary, as Redfall developer Arkane finds.
As soon as a game appears in the Xbox Game Pass offer, millions of subscribers have direct access to it.
This creates new opportunities for developers and their games. Arkane Austin recognizes this too. The studio is currently working on Redfall, the upcoming open world co-op action game for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
Studio director Harvey Smith said in an interview that he hopes players will recognize the studio’s values and be inspired by what you’re doing.
“I feel like with Xbox Game Pass we have an opportunity to say, ‘This is Arkane, and this is our creative values - we can show a lot of people how we make games. I hope we can excite people about what we do: deep world creation, environmental stories, the ensuing outcomes of battles and powers, and creating lovingly crafted worlds with a real sense of history and character.”
But Smith also admits that a release on Xbox Game Pass can also be scary. You don’t know how many people will be playing Redfall in the first week, and you’ll quickly get feedback from players on what you’ve been working on over the past few years.
“The pool that Game Pass offers is huge for us. It’s kind of shocking and kind of scary. How many people will play Redfall in week one? What if it’s a lot more than we expected… we’ll get a lot of feedback very quickly and a lot of people will see what we’ve been working on for the past few years.”
Players are currently waiting for a firm release date for Redfall. It will be released this year for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC.
