In the past few weeks, The Last of Us has been on everyone’s lips again. No wonder, after all, the release of the HBO adaptation of the Playstation classic is just around the corner. Interviews and statements by people like Neil Druckmann, the co-president of Naughty Dog, are currently haunting the media landscape. Druckmann, who conceived the HBO series together with Craig Mazin, recently spoke about storytelling in an interview with the Washington Post. Among other things, he spoke about various details in the Last of Us games or thoughts on the series, which has already received the highest ratings. During the conversation, he showed great enthusiasm for the approach of Elden Ring in particular.
Storytelling around
Speaking live with the magazine, the co-president explains how the storytelling of the From Software title fascinates him: “[…]Lately I’ve been more enthusiastic about things like ‘Elden Ring (buy now 59.99 € / 53.99 € )’ or ‘Inside’, which don’t rely so much on a traditional narrative to tell their story and […] some of the best storytelling in ‘The Last of Us’ relies on cinematography.
But a lot of that is in the gameplay and in moving around in an environment and understanding the history of an environment through seeing and examining it.” Druckmann then emphasizes how much of today precisely this type of narrative, which the player community trusts, independently things Excited to find out in games.”Again, that doesn’t mean we’re never going to have dialogue or cutscenes again,” Druckmann said. “I think things like that are […] like tools in a toolbox.”
