If you plan to play Guilty Gear Strive in the evening, you might want to reconsider your plans. The title of Arc System Works has indeed just suffered an attack by hackers… and it’s not a pretty sight.

While Arc System Works games aren’t exactly known for their online game stability – we still remember the launch of Dragon Ball FighterZ – earlier in the week things got worse. The hit game Guilty Gear Strive, known for its animations worthy of an animated feature film, suffered an attack by hackers making some games unplayable.
These pirates would use the faults of what is called the “R-Code”, a program which includes all kinds of information on the players, like their nickname, but also their number of victories and defeats. This system – which already showed its flaws a few years ago – has therefore once again been attacked, which prevents some players from connecting or fully enjoying their game. More specifically, when you participate in an online match, the hacker has fun modifying certain details of the R-Code, such as your player name, and can even force you to send messages on the game chat to slow down the game, and this, until the whole thing becomes unplayable.
The problem currently affects few players and more generally those with a strong community, however, it attacks all game modes as long as you are connected. To “work around” the problem, Stephen Lyon, alias Sajam, a commentator on fighting game tournaments, then recommends switching his game to offline mode.
There is a feature to follow people in Guilty Gear Strive. Thus, even if the person does not stream his matches, it is possible to know when he is online or not and therefore to do things. For his part, Julian “Hotashi” Harris, a professional player of Guilty Gear Strive indicates that hackers occur on PC as well as on consoles.
Serious consequences?
The problem is obviously known by the developers. Zack “Shini” Tan, a producer at Arc System Works has announced on Twitter that he is “back in the office” to review all reports.
Unfortunately, despite the Arc System Works team being on the case, this hack still led to the postponement of the Strive VTuber tournament which was to start on January 6th. It only remains to hope that everything returns to normal as soon as possible.
