Tested since 2019 in the Alpes-Maritimes and the Rhône and in six other departments since 2022, the digital Vitale card, or “Vitale e-card”, should be democratized at all regional mutuals in 2023 before its general adoption planned for her for 2026.
The Vitale card, 25 years of history at the service of the French
If you live in Bas-Rhin, Loire-Atlantique, Puy-de-Dôme, Saône-et-Loire, Sarthe, Seine-Maritime, Alpes-Maritimes or Rhône, perhaps you part of the volunteers who have been taking part for several months in the life-size test of the digitization of the Vitale card.
Created in 1998 to modernize the policyholder reimbursement system and simplify procedures, the Vitale card, originally, was linked, not to a person, but to a family home. The administrative data of the entire family was thus found there and the latter contained only a limited amount of administrative information.
It was in 2007 that the Vitale card became nominative with a new chip capable this time of containing your medical data to simplify exchanges between health personnel, the insured person and social security.
In 2023, nearly 25 years after the release of the Vitale card, the latter is gradually freeing itself from its physical model to begin its digital transition.
After the identity card, the Vitale card now has a digital version
It was by a decree published in the Official Journal dated December 28, 2022 that the case was formalized.
Concretely, what does it change for us and how will it happen?
In fact, and in the immediate future, nothing will change for you. The democratization and generalization of this tool is only planned for January 1, 2026. This therefore leaves us 3 years to test, understand and have this new version of the Vitale card adopted.
If for the youngest the transition should be simple and quick, the question arises for the oldest, those who are not autonomous or who simply do not have a smartphone.
Is the current “material” Vitale card disappearing?
No. Reassure your parents or your grandparents, if a digital version of your Vitale card will be offered to you very soon by your regional health insurance fund, nothing obliges you to use it for the moment. The Ministry of Health intends to take advantage of the next three years to pass this tool smoothly. And even if you (or someone close to you) are in one of the situations mentioned above, the physical card will still be available. But until when ? We do not know.
The digital Vitale card, how does it work?
To benefit from your Vitale card in digital format, you will need to request it soon on your customer area of the Ameli site and then use a new application called “apCV”, in which you will find your “health insurance e-card”. as it is now called.
Then, nothing could be simpler, all you have to do is scan the QR code presentation in the application, or use the NFC chip on your smartphone at equipped doctors or pharmacists.
Be careful however, if the physical version remains available everywhere and for the moment without an end date, switching to the digital version will automatically cancel the original card. It will not be possible to have both a digital and physical version of the map. Finally, according to the latest feedback and experiences in the regional mutuals where the digital Vitale card is already in place, training should be offered to senior volunteers who wish to modernize.
