Unbelievable: It’s been almost 17 (!) years since a sandals film was released in cinemas in 2006, which eclipsed everything that had come before in terms of staging and aesthetics. With “300” Zack Snyder delivered the almost perfect comic adaptation. After Dawn of the Dead, he celebrated his final breakthrough with the “history” drama and then made it to number 1 at Marvel competitor DC. “300” made Gerard Butler a world star, paved the way for Lena Headey to Game of Thrones and offered Michael Fassbender a stage to flash his incredible talent in Hollywood. But the secret star of “300” was someone else entirely.
“300” – Leonidas vs. Xerxes
The cinema hit “300” historically takes many artistic liberties. Based on a Frank Miller comic (The Dark Knight Returns, Sin City), the screen adaptation roughly follows the Spartans’ confrontation with an overwhelming Persian force. However, any references to historical events are sacrificed for aesthetics and a staging that is anything but realistic.
Strictly speaking, “300” is a superhero film adaptation in a fantasy setting. Some of the characters have superhuman abilities, are completely overdrawn and defy all the rules of physics. In particular, Great King Xerxes of Persia, with his enormous body size and grandeur, seems as if he did not come from this world.
