Angela Bassette, a pioneer at the Golden Globes
Angela Bassett won her second Golden Globe in two nominationsafter winning Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy in 1993, for portraying Tina Turner in the biopic Tina. At the time, she was the first African-American actress to win the award. In 2023, she is still a pioneer. When 80th Golden Globes ceremonyAngela Basset walked away with the award for Best Supporting Actress for playing the Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. At 64, she thus becomes the first actress (actresses and actors combined in this case) to win a major acting award for a role in movie based on the Marvel comics.
A tribute to Chadwick Boseman
I have to find my words. I’m so nervous. My heart won’t stop beating. The late Tony Morrison said that your life is already a miracle of chance waiting for you to command its fate. But for this destiny to manifest itself, I think it takes the courage to have faith. It takes patience, as we just heard. And that requires real knowledge of yourself. It’s not easy because the past is tortuous and has many unexpected twists and turns, but by the grace of God I’m standing here. I am grateful here.
Angela Bassett didn’t fail to give her thanksboth for her husband Courtney B. Vance, and the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever film crews. Whether it’s the director Ryan Coogleryou boss de Marvel Studios Kevin Feigeproducers Victoria Alonso, Nate Moore, or Louis D’Esposito … Above all, she lingered on a few words for Chadwick Bosemanwho died of colon cancer in 2020. The one who played Black Panther until this last filmleft an indelible mark on his colleagues in the teams of the saga.
We embarked on this journey together with love. We cried, we loved, we healed. We were surrounded every day by the light and spirit of Chadwick Boseman. It brings us joy to know that with this historic “Black Panther” saga, it is a part of his legacy to have helped lead us. We showed the world what Black unity, leadership and love looks like, behind and in front of the camera. To Marvel fans, thank you for embracing these characters and showing us so much love. This prize belongs to all of you, to all of us. Thanks.
Winning an award for a superhero movie, a rare accomplishment
It is therefore the first time any actor has won a major award for a role at Marvel. But when you take a step back from this kind of film, winning this award seems raise even more of the feat. Indeed, before this ceremony, only four actors – all male – have even been nominated for a Golden Globe after starring in a superhero movie. First of all Jack Nicholson, for his role as the Joker in Tim Burton’s Batman in 1989, he was beaten by Morgan Freeman for the role of Hoke Colburn in Miss Daisy and her driver. Heath Ledger had won the prize for his interpretation of the Joker in The Dark Knight one in 2008. One in 2016, Ryan Reynolds had been nominated for his role as Deadpool in the eponymous film, but beaten by Ryan Gosling for the role of Sebastian in La La Land. In 2019, Joaquin Phoenix had won the award for his role… as the Joker, again, in the eponymous film. Note, Ledger and Phoenix, and DC Comics with them, still have a head start since they had also won an Oscar for these roles.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is still showing in cinemas in France. The next Marvel movie to be released here will be Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which premieres February 15.
